Special Five-story Pagoda Opening at Toji

Toji is a World Heritage Site and has the tallest wooden building in Japan (55 meters high). Usually visitors can’t see inside, but for a limited time, Toji will open the inside of the first floor of this historical pagoda. Visitors can see other important historical objects as well. 9:00 – 16:00 January 10th – March 18th.


End of Winter Event at Yasaka Shrine

In Japan, there is a tradition on February 2nd – 4th where people celebrate the end of winter by throwing beans and calling out “Oni (imaginary monsters)get out, Fuku (happiness) come inside”. There are many temples and shrines holding this tradition on a larger scale. On the 2nd, Maikos/Geikos (Geishas) from Pontocho District and Miyagawacho District will perform a traditional dance and throw beans at 13:00 and 15:00 respectively. And on the 3rd, Maikos/Geikos from Gion Kobu District and Gion Higashi District will also have a dance performance and join the bean throwing event at 13:00 and 15:00 respectively.

Flea Market at Hyakumanben

This flea market is very popular and has been held for about 20 years. There are many shops selling a large variety of hand-made products.
