Ume Ume Festival at Umemiya Shrine

Ume Ume Festival is an event to enjoy viewing the colorful plum flowers. Umemiya Shrine is known to be beneficial when praying for delivery of a baby. This shrine has 550 plum trees in its garden. At this festival, guests will be served with Plum juice for free. 9:00 – 17:00. March 2nd. Note that 500 yen entry fee is required.

Hina Doll Float at Shimogamo Shrine

Shimoga Shrine has a religious event on March 3rd where Japanese traditional dolls, called “Hina” dolls, float on the river in straw boats, praying for children’s safety. Shimogamo Shrine is designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. 11:00 -. March 3rd.

Rain Making Ritual at Kifune Shrine

Kifune Shrine enshrines a God of Water called Takaokaminokami, and they have a religious event to call for rain and pray for good harvest during the year. Shinto priests will make a sound by beating Taiko drums and ringing bells, then they will sprinkle holy water combined with Sake and salt into the air. 10:00 -. March 9th.

Hanatoro Illumination Event in Higashimaya Area

Hanatoro is an annual illumination event held in Higashiyama and Arashiyama areas. From March 14th – 23rd, the areas around Kiyomizudera Temple, Kodaiji Temple, Yasaka Shrine and Chionin Temple are beautifully illuminated and decorated with flower arrangements by Ikenobo group. This event will be described in more detail in a future article. 18:00 – 21:30. March 14th – 23rd.

Future Beauty: Japanese Fashion Display at The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto

The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto will have a collection to show latest Japanese fashion culture represented by a couple of leading designers such as Issei Miyake and Yoji Yamamoto. They will also provide many pictures and videos to display the creativity of the Japanese fashion scene. 9:30 – 17:00. March 21st – May 11th. 1200 yen/adult, 800 yen/university student, 500 yen/high school student, free/junior high school student and under.
