As mentioned in “Kyoto 2014 Spring Illumination Event List & Calender“, Kyoto has many choices for sightseeing at night during Spring. Some are paid, and others are free.
This one, held at Rokkakudo (official name is Chohoji Temple) is free to enter. Rokkakudo is not a big temple. It is unique because it is in the center of Kyoto’s business district and therefore is surrounded by tall modern-looking office buildings. There is one more thing which makes this temple special.
The biggest traditional flower arrangement group called “Ikenobo” originated in this temple. And its grand master has been managing this temple for a long period of time.
This results in the most gorgeous illumination event in Kyoto. According to the official website, a vigorous flower arrangement which uses a 6 meter tall cherry tree is going to be exhibited this year.
In addition to the illumination event, Ikenobo will also host one of the biggest flower arrangement exhibition at their headquarter building which is right next to Rokkakudo. (500 yen (free for people under high school students) April 11th – 14th. 10:00 – 18:00 (17:00 on 12th and 16:00 on 14th))
