There are two ways to use trains to get to Nara from Kyoto; JR or Kintetsu.
Compared to JR lines, Kintetsu is better in terms of time and price (10 minutes faster and 90 yen cheaper).
But the biggest difference is that Kintetsu has a luxurious limited express, while JR doesn’t.
From Kyoto to Nara, it takes about 50 minutes by (normal) Kintetsu express. Depending on the time, it might be crowded, and it is possible that no seats are available. For those who want to shorten the traveling time even more with comfortable seats available, why not take the limited express instead?
The limited express ticket consists of normal ticket (620 yen) and express ticket (510 yen). It is 510 yen higher than the normal (express) trains.
There is a good news for the passengers of the limited express. Kintetsu will reduce the price for their limited express ticket in September 2015 by 20%. The express ticket will be 400 yen. In total, it will be 1020 yen/adult.
This offer applies to 27 trains which leave Kyoto Station and Kintetsu Nara Station from 10:00 – 17:00 on weekdays. To take advantage of this service, passengers have to purchase both tickets (normal % express) at the ticket office at the same time.
It might be a good idea to use the normal express on the way and the limited express on the way back because walking around Nara for several hours can be exhausting in hot and sunny September.
