Kyoto is one of the most popular sightseeing destinations in the world. In fact, in 2013, there were more than 51,620,000 visitors in Kyoto, including over 1 million foreign tourists. Visitors have had trouble making reservations for hotels, especially during busy seasons and weekends, due to the lack of hotel rooms available.
The most scarce type of hotel is the western luxury hotel. Now there are some hotels in this category, such as Westin Miyako Hotel, Hyatt Regency and Ritz Carlton which opened this February. And Four Seasons Hotel will open this winter. It might sound like there are enough. But there will be one more.
In 2016, Nishitetsu Hotel Group will open a gorgeous luxury hotel near Kamogawa Riverside. More specifically, very close to Sanjo Station. This could turn out to be a direct competitor to other high class hotels in this area, Hotel Okura and Royal Park Hotel. This area and Kyot in general have strict rules for construction to preserve the historical landscape, therefore it is unlikely that this hotel is going to be very tall.
