Kyoto Lab (Matchizukuri Kotsu Kenkyujo) has several tourist-friendly services, including the one and only hop on/off bus in Kyoto called Kyoto World Heritage Tour Bus and a special night bus called Night Cruise Bus Tour which visits Kyoto’s famous architectures that are illuminated.
Kyoto Lab’s new service, “Otanesan”, which started in March 2014, is very convenient for tourists, since this bus skips many bus stations and only stops at Toji Temple, Kyoto Aquarium, Umekoji Park and Nishi Honganji Temple. In addition, this express bus starts at Hachijo Exit (Shinkansen side, opposite of Kyoto Tower side) at Kyoto Station, which is far less busy. This means time can be spent actually sightseeing.
Furthermore, this express bus accepts One Day Bus Pass. Thus it is wise to stick to using this route for just one day and visit all of the spots mentioned above. The catch is that this bus operates only on weekends and some busy times of the year, August 14th – August 16th and December 29th – January 4th. The price is the same as the normal City Bus, which is 230 yen/adult, 120 yen/child. This bus operates every 20 minutes from 9 am to 16:40 pm.
