Kitayama X’mas Illumination December 1st – December 25th

Kitayama Street, which is famous for its beautiful boulevard with several wedding ceremony establishments will be lit up for almost one month for X’mas. The area with beautiful wedding buildings is illuminated using 100,000 light bulbs. It’s perfect for those traveling with someone special. 17:00 – 22:00.


The 300 meters centered around Matsugasaki Station on Kitayama Street will be lit up.

Arashiyama Hanatoro December 12th – 25th

Hanatoro is an annual illumination event held in the Higashiyama Area (Kiyomizudera Temple, Kodaiji Temple and so on) and the Arashiyama Area. During this period, famous and historical monuments and buildings in Arashiyama will be illuminated, including the bamboo alley which is used as the cover of our Kyoto e-Guidebook, Togetsukyo Bridge, Tenryuji Temple, Nisonin Temple, Nonomiya Shrine and more. 17:00 – 20:30.

X’mas Illumination at Kyoto Botanical Garden December 13th – 25th

Kyoto Botanical Garden in the Kitayama Area also holds an illumination event at two of their facilities, the green house and the botanical garden hall. Note that although the illumination will start at 17:30, the premises closes at 17:00. Therefore, for those who want to see the illumination, wait until 17:30 and buy a ticket in the evening. Furthermore, the botanical garden will have a projection mapping at the gate on Kitayama Street from December 20th – December 23rd. So it is a good idea to visit on one of these three days (20th, 21st, or 22nd) to enjoy both the illumination and the projection mapping.
Illumination – 17:30 – 20:00 (Last Entry 19:30) Projection Mapping – 18:00 – 20:00. Fee: 200 yen.

Tsudoi Tenjin December 25th

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, usually called Tenjin-san by Kyoto locals, has a event on the 25th of every month. There are many small shops. The last one in the year is called Tsudoi Tenjin and it is busier and merrier than usual. Some shops at Tsudoi Tenjin offer New Year related products. Also, it is fun to try the festival foods. In addition, Kitano Tenmangu Shrines hold an illumination event on the same day every month. Tsudoi Tenjin 9:00 –. Illumination starts when the sun goes down – 21:00.
