Takiginoh Preview – Rare Opportunity to See Traditional Theatrical Performance for Free

This is indeed a rare opportunity.
On May 17th, a preview of Takigino will be held at Museum of Kyoto.
Takigino is a type of Noh performance where Noh actors perform on an outdoor stage by torchlight.

Noh is a traditional type of theatrical performance in which the main and supporting actors wear masks.
Another important point to note is that Noh is performed on a very narrow stage. This stage consists of a main 6×6 meter square stage and hallway-like space which extends from left side of the main stage. Actors, singers and instrument players share the stage. Because of this intimate atmosphere, it is very dynamic and vigorous for the audience.

Since this is a preview, the long, main performance will be at held a different time and different location. The main Takiginoh will be performed at Heian Jingu on June 1st and 2nd, starting at 17:30 (the venue will open at 16:30). This performance costs 3000 yen, and tickets can be purchased at many hotels in Kyoto City.

The preview will be performed three times, starting at 11:00, 14:00 and 16:00 at Museum of Kyoto, on May 17th.
