Hanatoro in Arashiyama is coming very soon.
Hanatoro is a name of the event that is held twice a year in Higashiyama area and Arashiayama area, both in Kyoto.
Hanatoro in Higashiyama is held in March, and the one in Arashiyama is held in December, more specifically, from December 11th to 20th.
Although it is chilly outside this season, Hanatoro is a perfect event to enjoy sightseeing in Kyoto at night. Check out the simple map below, and enjoy viewing the beautifully illuminated Arashiyama area. The best route starts from JR Saga Arashiyama Station or Hankyu Arashiyama Station and finishs at Nisonin Temple. From Nisonin Temple, a free jumbo taxi which goes to JR Saga Arashiyama Station is available. Note that it only goes from Nisonin Temple to the station, not the other way around.
JR Arashiyama Station can be reached easily from JR Kyoto Station by JR Sanin Honsen (Sagano Line). The Sanin Honsen can be found either at platform 31, 32 or 33 as of this writing. It is the 6th stop from Kyoto Station, takes only about 15 minutes and costs 240 yen/adult. It is possible to use the bus, but considering the time needed to get there, the train is highly recommended.
