As explained in “Where to Go on New Year’s Eve in Kyoto – 3 Temples Where You Can Ring the Bell almost certainly“, some transportation organizations provide service overnight on New Year’s Eve. This is useful because many people decide to visit temples and shrines in the middle of the night, right before the New Year begins.
Although most routes are not available, there are still many spots you can visit on lines providing overnight service. They include:
Kitano Tenmangu Shrine
Access: Take City Bus 50, and get off at Kitano Tenmangumae.
Access: Take City Bus 201 and get off at Demachi Yanagiekimae.
Heian Jingu Shrine
Access: Take Subway Tozai Line and get off at Higashiyama. Walk 5 minutes. Or take City Bus 201 and get off at Okazaki Koen Rohm Theater Kyoto Miyako Messe mae.
Access: Take City Bus 206 and get off at Gojozaka.

Access: Take Subway Tozai Line and get off at Higashiyama. Walk 20 minutes.
One thing that should be noted for those with a One Day Pass is that if you use it on New Year’s Eve, it won’t be usable at the next day, which is January 1st. In this case, you are required to pay the fare. Therefore before getting on the bus, ensure that you have enough coins (230 yen/adult, 120 yen/child). The following map might be helpful when going out to a shrine or a temple for New Year’s Eve and New Year Day.
