Miyako Dance Performance – April 1st to April 30th
Although Maikos/Geikos are culturally valuable and special to Kyoto, basically there is no chance to experience the atmosphere created by them, except for this one month long performance, called Miyako Odori. At Miyako Odori, visitors can see Maikos/Geikos professional dance performance. Seiryukai Parade at Kiyomizudera Temple – April 3rd
Kyoto was chosen to be a capital based on the concept of ideal topography for the four Taoist gods. And the area, which includes Kiyomizudera Temple, is designated as a representation of a blue dragon. For those who plan to go to Kiyomizudera Temple on April 3rd, it is a good idea to adjust the schedule to take a look at this parade. This event starts at 14:00 on April 3rd.
Kyoto Imperial Palace Public Opening – April 6th to April 10th
Kyoto Imperial Palace usually requires visitors to make a reservation to go inside. But it opens to the public without reservations twice a year. When visiting the imperial palace for this period, be sure to go to the north side, where many beautiful cherry blossoms can be viewed (the earlier the better). 9:00 – 15:30.
Illumination at Rokkakudo – April 15th to April 17th
Rokkakudo is one of the most unique temples in Kyoto, which is managed by the representative of the biggest traditional flower arrangement group called Ikenobo. Thus this illumination at Rokkakudo (official name is Chohoji) is a perfect opportunity to see the creativity and aesthetic sense of Japanese flower arrangement. 18:00 – 21:00.
Illumination at Shoren-in Temple – April 29th to May 8th
Shoren-in is not a big temple, but its history is very deep and prestigious, since it had established relationships with court families. Shoren-in’s illumination is regarded as one of the best in Kyoto. Their illumination focuses on the color blue, which makes for a majestic and serene atmosphere. 18:00 – 22:00 (Last Entry 21:30). 800 yen/Adult, 400 yen/High, Middle & Elementary Student.
