Kyoto has long attracted visitors from inside and outside Japan.
This is easy to see from the stats provided by Kyoto City, where the number of foreign visitors who stayed at least one night in Kyoto increased from 1,330,000 people to 3,160,000 from 2014 to 2015 (73% up).
Kyoto City was hoping to reach the 3,000,000 visitor milestone in 2020, which means they managed to meet this goal five years early. This trend should probably continue, considering that Kyoto has a plenty of sightseeing resources, which makes people want to visit again (and again).
Kyoto has long dealt with a lack of accommodation facilities for visitors. This situation has been changing thanks to new hotels such as Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons (will open autumn in 2016). There are many more coming, and it is possible that a vacation rental style (aka Airbnb) might become popular in near future.
