4 Mouthwatering Steakhouse Restaurants in Kyoto

What do you want to eat in Japan? Sushi, Tempura, Raamen, Soba, and Tofu are the usual suspects. But some (or many) of you might want to try meat, especially Japanese beef, also known as “Wagyu”. And that is a wonderful choice. Japanese beef might be pricey but it is also tender and delicious. And it is a perfect solution for keeping up the power to energize you through the hectic sightseeing activities in Kyoto, which tend to involve a lot of walking.

So here are four mouthwatering steakhouses in Kyoto. Depending on the restaurant, it might be better to make a reservation beforehand (ask your hotel/hostel staff for help).

If you’re thinking, “since I am in Kyoto, I should try Kyoto local beef”, this is the steakhouse for you. SORA uses quality Kyoto Beef. Kyoto Beef is very rare, with only 500 – 600 cattle in the marketplace each year. At SORA the Kyoto Beef course has a relatively reasonable price for lunch (3380 yen). Note that you need to make a reservation beforehand (ask Japanese staff at your hotel). You can also eat Wagyu steak as well, whose price is even more reasonable.

If you fancy a gorgeous meal of Wagyu beef, something you would eat for a special occasion like an anniversary, this steakhouse is a excellent place to go. Hafuu proudly traces meat to its root, the butcher. That is the reason they can promise the best quality beef. It is a good idea to make a reservation, especially if you would like to try their course menu for dinner.

Steakhouse Pound could be one of the most popular steak restaurants in Kyoto. Pound takes pride in their dry aged beef. Their beef comes from Kagoshima in Kyushu, where the owner of this restaurant has found the best meat for their dry aging method. Additionally, they serve fresh Kyoto local vegetables. You can take a look at different cuts of meat and decide how much you want to eat, 1/4 pound, 1/2 pound, 1 pound, 2 pounds or 3 pounds. The price depends on the cut and amount. But on average you might want to prepare about 10,000 yen per person. Or you can choose a course (4,000 yen, 6,000 yen or 8,000 yen). This is a serious place for the serious beef foodies out there.

Steak Donya

The restaurants above are rather fancy and luxurious, which is typical for this type of restaurant. But for those who want to eat more affordable beef in Kyoto, Steak Donya is a fantastic destination. Their flagship dish, steakdon (steak on the rice bowl), uses thinly sliced rare beef steak. And believe it or not, the beef’s quality is very high. Although the accessibility is less attractive compared the three restaurants above (it is a perfect after visiting Shimogamo Shrine), the fact that you can eat exquisite beef for about 1,000 – 1,500 yen, makes it worth visiting.
