If you are in Kyoto (– December 4th 2016), go to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine to see the beautifully-lit red maples.
There are many illumination events in this season. Kitano Tenmangu’s illumination is known to be more traditional in a way, since they tend to use the existing assets such as the stone lanterns to light up the premises.
A view of the shrine between the vivid red maples are astonishingly beautiful and has an unique and historical atmosphere.
Note that it is required to pay 700 yen to enter the maple garden, and the illumination starts at the sundown and ends at 20:00.
