5 Selected Restaurants in Kyoto

The following five restaurants are highly popular and make people want to come back again and again. For vegetarians, check out Kyoto Vegetarian Restaurant List or Kyoto Vegan Restaurant List. Additionally, there are much more restaurants and cafes in Area pages.

Togaden (Tofu)

Toganden is a tofu restaurant (2nd floor). They serve authentic tofu dishes, and the Yuba Don (Soy curd skin on rice) is especially recommended. In case the Yuba Don is sold out (sometimes it is), then Tofu Karaage Don (deep fried tofu on rice) might be nice. In addition to its quality, the reasonable price is also attactive (1000 – 1500 yen), since the authentic Tofu restrants are usually expensive.

PRICE:
1000 – 1500 yen
OPEN HOURS:
11:00 – 20:30

Sankyu (Sushi)

Kyoto has several Sushi restaurants. Sushi is regarded as a luxurious food but actually the price depends on the restaurant. Most of the time, the quality reflects the price. Taking this into consideration, Sankyu is the sushi restaurant which I personally recommend. Considering the reasonable price (1500 yen – 2200 yen), the quality is very high. Customers can order one by one, but the sets are much easier. They do not have an English menu, so just point the set which looks good on the picture menu. Green tea is free of charge.

PRICE:
1500 – 2200 yen
OPEN HOURS:
11:00 – 23:00 (Last Order 22:30)

Omoya (French)

Omoya is a French restaurant with a Japanese twist. It is a French style meal which involves using chopsticks sometimes. The restaurant uses a traditional building called Machiya. Customers here can eat high quality French food in a very Japanese atmosphere. It is a French restaurant, but it is relatively casual (staff are formal) and the price is also relatively affordable. If visiting this restaurant on the weekend, it is safer to make a reservation. In that case, ask the hotel staff.

PRICE:
2000 – 10000 yen
OPENHOURS:
11:30 – 14:30 (Lunch) 17:30 – 21:00 (Dinner)

Toyotei (Western)

Toyotei serves meaty Western style meals such as hamburgers, hamburger stew, cutlet and a deep-fried prawn. At Toyotei, the set menu called tomato set with tomato salad and bread/rice is a must. Their tomato salad consists of a single stewed tomato with a tart sauce and is very refreshing. A hamburger (steak) is the most popular at Toyotei. Toyotei has several locations in Kyoto. The original restaurant is very nice, but they have branches at Kyoto station’s Porta – underground, Kintesu Kyoto station and at Takashimaya department store (Shijo Street).

PRICE:
1500 – 3000 yen
OPEN HOURS:
11:00 – 17:00 (Lunch) 17:00 – 22:00 (Dinner)

Umenohana (Tofu)

Umenohana is a very nice tofu restaurant located at Karasuma Oike and Fushimi. They basically serve sets with five to ten different tofu related foods. The individual dishes are small, but the total meal is quite large. This restaurant is very busy, so making a reservation is highly recommended, but please note that it is required to order sets with prices higher than 4000 yen to make a reservation. 4000 yen might sound expensive for relatively simple food like tofu, but it is not that simple here. They deliver flavorful and healthy meals with many innovative approaches.

PRICE:
3000 – 7000 yen

11:00 – 16:00 (Last Order 15:00) 17:00 – 22:00 (Last Order 21:00)
